On Saturday 20th July competitors, spectators and volunteers gathered for the much-anticipated SAQ Showjumping Gala. Held under clear, sunny skies, the event attracted a notable lineup of 27 horses, including nine Standardbreds, ready to showcase their talents across three competitive classes.
The Showjumping Gala featured a series of classes designed to challenge riders and entertain spectators. The classes were divided into 40cm, 60cm, and 80cm height categories, each consisting of three rounds: Top Score, AM7, and Fault and Out. This format provided a comprehensive test of the horse and rider combinations’ agility, precision, and speed, making for a fun and challenging event.
The atmosphere at the event was friendly and low-pressure, making it a relaxed and enjoyable day for both seasoned competitors and newcomers alike.
The Standardbred 40cm class was won by Ditta Crisci riding the Zeus. Julie Mourilyan secured second place with Torque With An Ace; and Julie on Take A Chance also shared the third spot with Louise Cooper, who rode Ziggy.
In the Standardbred 60cm class, John MacDonald excelled, taking first place with Mr Kalypso. Nicki Chalk followed closely in second place on Mac Sweeny. Impressively, both these combinations also took out first and second place in the Open 60cm class, further proving their talent. Mr Kalypso’s outstanding performance throughout the day also earned him the SAQ Adoption Horse Award, highlighting his capabilities and the successful transition from his harness career to ridden competition.
The other classes were equally exciting, with competitors pushing their limits and giving it their best shot with the encouragement of the spectating audience.
Overall, the day was a success. The combination of competitive spirit, friendship, and beautiful weather created a fantastic experience for everyone involved. The event not only supported Standardbreds in the showjumping arena but also reinforced the supportive and inclusive nature of the SAQ community and, above all, was a celebration of the growing partnerships between horses and their riders.
