The Standardbred Association of Queensland held its August Muster on Saturday, 24th August 2024. The weather was perfect, and we welcomed a small but enthusiastic group of riders and their horses. With a relaxed atmosphere, the day was all about enjoying each other’s company and making the most of the SAQ’s working equitation equipment.
The theme for the day, “Show Craft and Ring Etiquette,” offered attendees a chance to learn more about the intricacies and subtleties of showing. It was a great opportunity for both seasoned competitors and those new to the sport to learn from each other and gain valuable insights into how to handle their horses to show them at their best, and what judges might look for during a show.
The group shared tips and tricks on maximising the showing experience and discussed topics such as; is it considered polite or impolite to approach a judge, and how to request feedback. This open forum allowed everyone to voice their thoughts and share personal anecdotes, offering a wealth of knowledge that ranged from in-ring performance tips and how to get the most out of our showing experiences. The conversation flowed easily, with laughter punctuating the discussion, emphasizing the friendly and supportive nature of the SAQ community.
As the day progressed, it was clear that the Muster was not just about introducing our horses to new experiences and practicing with equipment we may not have at home. It was also about building a sense of community among Standardbred owners and riders. The light-hearted atmosphere, combined with the educational theme, made for a perfect blend of fun and learning. There were many smiles and even more laughter as participants navigated the equipment and enjoyed each other’s company.
The August 2024 Muster was a testament to the spirit of the SAQ—bringing people together to celebrate their love for Standardbreds, sharing knowledge, and supporting each other in their horsemanship journeys. As the day ended, there was an unmistakable sense of satisfaction among the group, with everyone looking forward to the next Muster in October.
