About Wilbur

Wilbur is a 5yo black Standardbred gelding with a sweet, affectionate nature and a curious spark.

He retired from racing in March 2025 after 40 starts (Trotter), earning just over $12,000 for his connections. Now, he is ready to start a new chapter with someone who can offer him the time and care he needs to thrive.

Wilbur was retired due to inflammation in his near side front deep flexor tendon and will need 6–12 months of paddock rest to support a full recovery. He also carries a visible scar on his off side hind from a previous stitched skin injury, which has healed well without impacting muscle or movement, and has full range of motion. Additionally, he underwent a successful breathing entrapment procedure to correct a previous issue.

On the ground, Wilbur is easy to catch, float, worm, tie up and shoe. He has been exposed to vehicles, animals and children and takes it all in his stride. While he is generally calm and friendly, Wilbur can become a little head shy or pushy when feeling stressed, so he will benefit from a calm, experienced handler who can help build his confidence.

Though he hasn’t been started under saddle, Wilbur’s great work ethic suggest he will take to it well once he’s healed and given the right support.

If you are ready to give a deserving young gelding a second chance and a bright future, Wilbur could be your perfect partner!

RULE CHANGE COMING

With the phasing out of freeze branding, owners entering Standardbred and partbred Standardbred horses in breed classes at agricultural shows and other equine events across Australia, where breed is relevant, must be current financial members and horses registered with the home state’s Standardbred Pleasure and Performance Horse Association.
