SAQ Members Training Day – March

By Maxine Murphy

SAQ has added monthly Members Training Days at Marburg to their Events Calendar. These days are designed as a fun instruction day for members who just want to get their horses out and for those starting out with Standies under saddle, wanting to get some guidance to further educate their horses and give them confidence when out and about.

These monthly training days will be scheduled on the 3rd Saturday of every month and will be held at our home grounds at Marburg Show grounds. We are also offering similar monthly Members Training Days for our Northside members at Caboolture Show grounds.

SAQ held its first monthly Members Training Day for the year at Marburg on Saturday 19th March.

Ten horses and their supporters rolled up and the day started with gear checks and instruction on how to lead, how to stand your horse up for a judge to look at, how to run a horse out to show off to a judge,  as well as some show ring etiquette explained and demonstrated.

Then it was into riding and lots of walking, which is not as easy as it sounds. To keep a horse at a consistent even walk can be difficult on horse and rider and quite tiring for both. After a break it was onto circle work and then bending poles, practising how to bend your horse around your leg and around corners, adjusting your weight to help the horse and where to place your body.

The day ended with some obstacles to ride through.  In all it was a very productive day with a lovely group of very friendly people and all are looking forward to our next Training day at Marburg on 30th April which is a jumps training day (in preparation for our 2022 Showjumping Gala on 9th July at Marburg Show grounds) but will also be a recap of the first training day.
